The day I asked Amy to marry me I read her John 15 at a Starbucks at 8am.  We were there to get coffee in preparation for our big day ahead.  I had shown up an hour early hoping the caffeine would drown the butterflies living in my stomach.  Amy didn’t know what was ahead, but I did, and my palms were sweating before the sun came up.

I’ll never forget that morning or those words:  “I am the vine, you are the branches.  Abide in me and I in you.  For apart from me you can do nothing.” 

Yesterday I listened to my friend Kim talk for 2 hours.  She has perfect skin and eyebrows.  I’ve always hated her for that.  Anyhow, a couple years ago Kim went to Africa and never recovered.  Now she lives in Phoenix and studies social justice and reads books that rip your soul out.  If you could get on a train and ride it from one side of Kim’s heart to the other, you’d need to stop three of four times for a smoke break. 

Over the last 4 years our look has changed.  Thank God.

For the past three years I’ve served as a Project Coordinator for a ministry called Power Plant.  Power Plant is a week long mission trip intended to give Junior High and High School students a meaningful experience related to church planting. It’s amazing.  Trust me.

When Jesus walked the world he allowed children come to him – he allowed disease disappear – he allowed the righteous harsh words, and the poor, kind. 

Problem is, these stories live in a distant place and time and said place and time seem too far away to move and motivate the hearts of those in this place and this time.
